| Question: |
Who is it that did, what was done to Mary, that which made her pregnant?
| Luke 1: |
'the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a virgin whose name was Mary.'
| Gabriel: |
'thou shalt conceive in thy womb and bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be great and shall be called the Son of the Highest'
| Mary: |
'How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?'
| Gabriel: |
''The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the Power of the Highest shall overshadow thee.'
| To the Point: |
The content of St. Luke's testimony above is clear. Gabriel and the Holy Ghost were abstract figures in the role they played. God was the Author and the other two were His divine functionaries. The being that would duly act upon Mary was he who would overshadow her. St. Luke identified him as 'the Power of the Highest'.(Luke 1:35) Jesus, the outcome, would be the 'Son of the Highest' (Luke 1:32)
| To Zacharias: |
it was foretold that John would be the 'Prophet of the Highest' (Luke 1:76)
Mary, as a cousin of Elizabeth, was of the daughters of Aaron ( Luke 1:5 & 36) of the tribe of Levi. It was prophesized of Jesus: 'And the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David and he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever.' ( Luke 1:32 & 33) St. Luke affirms that Jesus was of Davidic descent. How then can a Levite have the blood of David in his veins unless his father was of David's line?
A horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David.
Zachariah by inspiration prophesized saying: "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel for he hath visited and redeemed his people, and hath raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David."
If John was the horn of salvation in David's house and Jesus was of David's line, then John was truly Elias which was for to come. And if, in power and spirit, John was Elias (God with us) then in referring to John, St. Luke is right in ascribing to the being that overshadowed Mary the epithet of 'Power of the Highest' and Jesus as 'Son of the Highest.'

A FOOTNOTE
Matthew 11:9 --Jesus referring to John had this to say.
" A prophet? Yea, I say unto you and more than a prophet. He is Elias in power and in spirit." Luke 1:17
John therefore was prophet of the Highest and more. In power and spirit of Elias, he was the power of the Highest.
John is referred to as 'samiyya' 19:7
See 19:65 in its reference to Allah by the word 'samiyya'.

| Mary: |
Overshadowed by the power of the highest
| John: |
He was Prophet of the Highest, yea, and more |
| Jesus: |
He was Son of the Highest. |
God said that Mary's conception shall be by: the Power of the Highest,
not by Me (God),
not by Gabriel,
not by the Holy Ghost.
