Qur'anic Version of Mary's Lineage

Parentage and Her Role in God's Overall Plan

Q U R A N Chapter 3: Al-Imran

33."Allah chose Adam and Noah, and the family of Abraham and the family of Imran above all people,

34. Offspring , one of the other, and Allah is All- Hearing, All-Knowing.

35. Behold! a woman of Imran said: 'O my Lord, I have vowed to Thee what is in my womb to be dedicated to Thy service; so do accept it of me; verily, Thou alone art All-Hearing, All-Knowing.'

36. But when she was delivered of it, she said: 'O my Lord! Behold! I am delivered of a female child!' - and Allah knew best what she brought forth - 'and nowise is the male like the female. I have named her Mariam, and I commit her and her offspring to Thy protection from the Evil One, the rejected.'

37. So her Lord accepted her with a gracious acceptance: He made her grow in purity and beauty: to the care of Zakariya was she assigned. Every time Zakariya entered her chamber to see her, he found her supplied with sustenance. He said: 'O Mariam! Whence (comes) this to you?' She replied: 'from Allah; surely Allah provides sustenance to whom He pleases without measure'. "

COMMENTARIES TO 3:33-37

Commentary by George Sale, page 47:

The Imran here mentioned was the father of the Virgin Mary, and his wife's name was Hannah, or Ann the daughter of Fakudh. This woman, say the commentators, being aged and barren, on seeing a bird feed her young ones, became very desirous of issue, and begged a child of God, promising to consecrate it to his service in the temple; whereupon she had a child, but it proved a daughter.

Though the child happened not to be a male, yet her mother presented her to the priests who had the care of the temple, as one dedicated to God; and they having received her, she was committed to the care of Zacharias, as will be observed bye-and-bye, and he built her an apartment in the temple, and supplied her with necessaries.

The commentators say that none went into Mary's apartment but Zacharias himself, and that he locked seven doors upon her, yet he found she had always winter fruits in summer and summer fruits in winter.

Commentary #377 by Yusuf Ali:
The mother of Mary expected a male child. Was she disappointed that it was a female child? No, for she had Faith, and she knew that God's Plan was better than any wishes of hers. Mary was no ordinary girl; only God knew what it was that her mother brought forth.

Commentary. # 402 by Bashir Ahmad:
Mary's mother had made the vow in the hope that she would be blessed with a son whom she would dedicate to the service of God. Instead a daughter was born to her. So she was naturally perplexed.
