Surah Mariam: Verses 12, 13, 14 and 15

The Identity of John (Yahya) as Declared By Allah Himself in Four Verses (Ayats):

"12. (To his son came the command):

'O Yahya! Take hold of the Book with might.'

And We gave him wisdom even as a youth.

13. And pity (for all creatures) as from Us

and purity: he was devout.

14. And kind to his parents and he was not

overbearing or rebellious.

15. So Peace on him the day he was born,

the day that he dies and the day that he will

be raised up to life (again)'."

(See Below for Other translations and Arabic)

Key words:

1. Al - Kitab: John was given the Book.
2. Bikuwatin: With firmness or with resolve. Moses was told in 7: 145 when he was given the Tablets by God: 'Take hold of them with firmness ('bikuwatin').
3. Hukm: The word implies in its meaning more than intellectual wisdom.
4. Sabiyya: The word means 'youth' and is translated as such by Yusuf Ali in verse 12 in reference to John. George Sale said: 'like a full grown but beardless youth, ' (Commentary # 298). Note: Sabiyya will re-occur in verse 29 and you will judge the misleading meaning applied to it there.

Verses 12 to 15

That His description of John may not be misjudged, Allah went to this extreme. Verses 12 to 15 is a four- paragraph distinction by which the identity of John can unmistakably be known. John was peerless, he was unique, he was singular in this regard.

Anyone, therefore, answering to the identity of 12 - 15 would definitely be John and John only. There can be no duplicate, no counterfeit, nor no twin half of John. So tightly sealed is John's identity, divinely designed.

Lock this up safely in your mind. It is information at its highest. Live and direct from the Kalam of Allah.
