Surah Mariam: Verses 18

Mary Meets Taqeeya and Seeks the Protection Of The Beneficent:

Yusuf Ali Translation:

"18. (She said: 'I seek refuge from thee to

(Allah) Most Gracious; ( come not near)

if thou dost fear Allah'."

Muhammad Ali Translation:

18. "She said: I flee for refuge from thee to

the Beneficent, if thou art one guarding

against evil."

Arabic
Transliteration 18. QAALAT 'INNI -Y AcODHU BI- AR- RAH.MAAN MIN -KA 'IN KUNTA TAQEEY(AN)
Yusuf Ali 18. She said: "I seek refuge from thee to (Allah) Most Gracious: (come not near) if thou dost fear Allah."
Pickthall 18. She said: Lo! I seek refuge in the Beneficent One from thee, if thou art God fearing.
Shakir 18 . She said: Surely I fly for refuge from you to the Beneficent God, if you are one guarding (against evil).
Comments Note the word Taqeeya. The same word is used to describe John in verse 13. It is also used in 10:63 to describe those that will achieve Heaven

Key Words:

1. Ar-Rahmaan (Allah) Allah, by name, is not in the Arabic text of the verse, but His attribute of Ar-Rahmaan is besought by Mary.

2. Takeeya The being that Mary is exchanging words with is referred to as a

'takeeya' (in kun ta takeeya).

Allah called John 'takeeya' in verse 19:13 (wa kaa na takeeya)
The Quran refers to Our servants by the term 'takeeya' in verse 19:63.
(man kaa na takeeya).

Takeeya is he who is conscious of the consequences of his actions,
and being fully aware of the accountability. An angel cannot be a takeeya.

Yusuf Ali Commentary # 2471:

'She (Mary) thought it was a man. She was frightened, and she adjured him not to invade her privacy.'

Why is 'it' then all of a sudden becomes a 'him' ?

Question:

If RUHANNA was indeed an Angel, why was Mary afraid? She was accustomed to be spoken to and attended upon by Angels as believed.

Recap:

Was Mary in a dream or a vision? There is no word in the text that said so from 1 to 18. We will keep a watchful eye over her on this ahead.

Qur'anic Reference to 10:63
Arabic
Transliteration 63. TILKA AL- JANNAH 'ALLATE NORITH MIN cIBAAD -NAA MAN KAANA TAQEY(AN)
Yusuf Ali 63. Such is the Garden which We give as an inheritance to those of Our Servants who guard against evil.
Pickthall 63. Such is the Garden which We cause the devout among Our bondmen to inherit.
Shakir 63 . This is the garden which We cause those of Our servants to inherit who guard (against evil).
Comments Note the word Taqeeya. The same word is used to describe John in verse 13 and 18. The word is used in a different form in Surah Rahmaan 55:19.
