Transliteration 1. IQRA' BI- ISM RABB -KA 'ALLADHE KHALAQA
Yusuf Ali 1. Proclaim! (or Read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher Who created
Pickthall 1. Read: In the name of thy Lord who createth,
Shakir 1 . Read in the name of your Lord Who created.
Comments The first thing revealed to the Messenger to mankind was a command to Read and that we must do so in his name, he that created.

Transliteration 2. KHALAQA AL- 'INSAAN MIN cALAQ
Yusuf Ali 2. Created man out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood:
Pickthall 2. Createth man from a clot.
Shakir 2 . He created man from a clot.
Comments The second mention by our Lord is that He created man (insaan) from Alaq. A statement without exclusion, that man (all) is created from Alaq.

Yusuf Ali 3. Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful

Pickthall 4. Who teacheth by the pen,

Yusuf Ali 5. Taught man that which he knew not.
Pickthall 5. Teacheth man that which be knew not.
Shakir 5 . Taught man what he knew not.

Transliteration 6. KALLAA 'INNA AL- 'INSAAN LA- YAT.GHAA
Yusuf Ali 6. Nay but man doth transgress all bounds
Pickthall 6. Nay, but verily man is rebellious
Shakir 6 . Nay! man is most surely inordinate,
Comments Note that Allah emphatically says here that Insaan is Taghaa ( from Taghoot). See 2:256 and 2:257 for additional notes on this rebellious man called At-Taghoot

Transliteration 7. 'AN RA'AA -HU ISTAGHNAA
Yusuf Ali 7. In that he looketh upon himself as self-sufficient.
Pickthall 7. That he thinketh himself independent!
Shakir 7 . Because he sees himself free from want.

Yusuf Ali 8. Verily to thy Lord is the return (of all).
Pickthall 8. Lo! unto thy Lord is the return.

Yusuf Ali 10. A votary when he (turns) to pray?
Pickthall 10. A slave when he prayeth?

Yusuf Ali 11. Seest thou if He is on (the road of) Guidance?
Pickthall 11. Hast thou seen if he (relieth) on the guidance (of Allah)
Shakir 11 . Have you considered if he were on the right way,

Yusuf Ali 13. Seest thou if he denies (Truth) and turns away?
Pickthall 13. Hast thou seen if he denieth (Allah's guidance) and is froward?
Shakir 13 . Have you considered if he gives the lie to the truth and turns (his) back?

Yusuf Ali 14. Knoweth he not that Allah doth see?
Pickthall 14. Is he then unaware that Allah seeth?

Yusuf Ali 15. Let him beware! If he desist not We will drag him by the forelock
Pickthall 15. Nay, but if he cease not. We will seize him by the forelock
Shakir 15 . Nay! if he desist not, We would certainly smite his forehead,

Yusuf Ali 17. Then let him call (for help) to his council (of comrades):
Pickthall 17. Then let him call upon his henchmen!
Shakir 17 .Then let him summon his council,

Yusuf Ali 18. We will call on the angels of punishment (to deal with him)!
Pickthall 18. We will call the guards of hell.
Shakir 18 . We too would.summon the braves of the army.

Transliteration 19. KALLAA LAA TUT.Ic -HU WA- USJUD WA- IQTARIB
Yusuf Ali 19. Nay heed him not: but bow down in adoration and bring thyself the closer (to Allah)!
Pickthall 19. Nay! Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah).
Shakir 19 . Nay! obey him not, and make obeisance and draw nigh (to Allah).
